Biography of Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio) - 1483 - 1520)

Raphael was born the 6th April 1483, in Urbino. His father was a painter. He studied with Pietro Perugino in Perusa. Between 1500 and 1504, he lived in Florence and was influenced by Michelangelo, da Vinci and Bartolomé. In 1508, Bramante (who constructed St. Peter’s Basilica) recommended Raphael, which allowed the latter to achieve a reputation in Rome and start a series of works. After Bramante’s death, Raphael continued the works in the St. Peter’s Basilica as an architect. Besides artworks such as La Madonna, Raphael made several portraits of known celebrities during this period.

Along with Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael is one of the most representative artists from the High Renaissance. However, Raphael is the one that best embodies this art style. His work has influenced several generations of artists worldwide. He was also one of the first artists, like Titian and Durer, to use different materials on artworks, such as engraving and printing.
