The apparently quiet life of a painter

Peder Severin Kroyer was born on Jly 23rd, 1851 in the norwegian city Stavanger and grew at his aunt's home in Copenhagen. At the age of 14, he was already taking painting classes in the Danish Art Academy. In 1877 he traveled to France, Spain and Italy to study art.

In 1882 Kroyer visited for the first time Skagen and fell in love with the scenery, the sea, the country side and in particular the natural daylight. Kroyer became a companion of the local group of artists whose blooming period was during the 1880s. Painters from Denmark, Sweden and Norway were coming to join this group and work in a natural environment. Other famous painters from this group are the following: Frits Thaulow, Michael Peter Ancher, Anna Ancher, Carl Locher, Viggo Johansen, Christian Krohg, Eilif Peterssen und Laurits Regner Tuxen.

Peder Severin Kroyer became famous through his impressionist landscape paintings and portrait paintings that represented his apparently quiet lifestyle.

Peder Koryer became mentally ill in 1900 and died on November 21st, 1909 in Skagen.
