Biography of Joaquin Sorolla (1863 - 1923)

Sorrolla is a Spanish artist born on February 27, 1863 in Valencia. During his apprenticeship as a fitter his talent for drawing was discovered. So when he was only 15 years old he began to take drawing lessons from the sculptor Cayetano Capuz and was influenced by the works of Francisco Domingo y Marqués, Ignacio Pinazo Camarlech and Emilio Sala. In 1881 during a trip to Madrid, he discovered the works of Velázquez and Ribera exhibited at the Prado Museum, which he later copied.

Thanks to numerous successful exhibitions, in 1885 Sorolla obtained a scholarship that allowed him to study in Rome and become a student of Francisco Pradilla y Ortiz. The same year he also went to Paris where he saw the Impressionist works, which later influenced his painting style.

When he returned to Spain, he began to paint primarily realistic works depicting historical themes thanks to which he took part in numerous international exhibitions and received important awards.
With the money he earned, he afforded himself a vacation home in Cercedilla and a beach house in Valencia, in addition to his home in Madrid. Influenced by the work of the French Impressionists, outdoors and his dark palette brightened. He made portraits, genre scenes, landscapes and book illustrations. His favorite themes were depictions of everyday life, the beach and images of Spanish traditions and his beloved Valencia. The painting "Walk on the Beach" was created in 1909. On August 10, 1923 Sorolla died in Madrid.
