Biography of Camille Pissarro

From Impressionism to Pointillism

Camille Pissarro was born on July 10, 1830, on what is now called the American Virgin Islands in the Caribbean. At that time the area belonged to the Danish colony. Pissarro's mother came from the Dominican Republic and had Spanish ancestors while his father's family was originally from Portugal. The father saw his son as a successor to his hardware store. However, Pissarro preferred to spend his free time painting and spent every free minute at the harbor in his youth to draw from this spot. There he also made his first contacts with other artists. Above all, the Danish painter Fritz Melbye recognized his talent and encouraged him to remain faithful to painting, even against the wishes of his father.

Camille Pissarro is one of the most important Impressionist painters and developed his style throughout his life to Pointillism. He mainly painted with pure, unmixed complementary colors, which he staged in ever shorter brushstrokes. Typical of Pointillism is - in contrast to impressionism - a mixture of pure colors to achieve total harmony.

Camille Pissarro died on 12 November 1903 at the age of 73 in Paris.
