Arnold Böcklin was born on 16 October 1827 in Basel and is considered to be one of the most important artists of the 19th century Europe of symbolism. The Swiss worked as a painter, draftsman, graphic artist and sculptor.

He was the son of a merchant and received drawing lessons at the Kunstakademie of Düsseldorf from 1845 to 1847. In 1847 he undertook a study trip to Belgium, where he was strongly influenced by the work of Peter Paul Rubens. Further travels took him to Switzerland and the Netherlands, before he went to Paris in 1848 and studied at the Louvre. His first characteristic landscapes were created in 1850 in Basel. From 1850 to 1857 he worked in Rome, where he sat heavily with the "old masters" (the term "old masters" in the art of painting artists of the 14th to 18th centuries and their works are summarized) With his painting "Pan in the reed" from 1859 he first became more famous. The painter's preference was for natural landscapes. He played with light and shadow, intense luminosity of his colors, his pictures testify to emotional depth.

On January 16, 1901, he died in San Domenico near Florence.
