Rembrandt was born on July 15, 1606, as the son of a miller in the Dutch city of Leiden. He initially attended the Latin school of his hometown and completed an apprenticeship with the painter van Swanenburgh between the years 1621 and 1623. This period of training was followed by a six-month stay in the workshop of the history painter Pieter Lastman in Amsterdam, who also accepted him as a pupil. In 1625, he finally returned to Leiden and opened his own studio. About six to seven years later, he moved to Amsterdam and married Saskia van Uylenburgh in 1634, the niece of the painter Hendrik Uylenburgh, with whom Rembrandt lived in Amsterdam until 1635.

Rembrandt achieved prosperity through his work and lived in Amsterdam with Saskia, who gave birth to four children, of whom only their son Titus would survive the first weeks of life. After Saskia's death in 1642, Rembrandt hired the governess Geertje Dircks to care for Titus. Geertje sued him in 1649 for breach of a marriage promise, resulting in Rembrandt having to pay her 200 guilders annually; however, he had Geertje arrested and placed in the women's prison in Gouda. In 1654, his lover Hendrickje Stoffels gave birth to a daughter named "Cornelia" - named after Rembrandt's mother.

In the following years, his financial situation deteriorated rapidly; on the one hand, his portrait style was no longer considered contemporary, and on the other hand, the owner of his house insisted on full payment of the remaining purchase price. Consequently, in 1657/58, his possessions were auctioned off, and Rembrandt lost his house, as well as all his drawings and paintings, which were sold. After Hendrickje died in 1663, Rembrandt married Magdalena van Loo, the niece of his aunt Titia, in 1668. In the same year, his son Titus died; a year later, on October 4, 1669, Rembrandt himself followed, having spent his last years in great poverty.

Rembrandt was one of the most important Dutch painters, and his baroque works profoundly influenced subsequent generations of artists. In addition to his famous paintings, he also created numerous etchings and drawings, particularly captivating with the diversity of his choice of subjects and the use of various techniques and materials.
