Catrin Welz-Stein was born in Weinheim, Germany. She studied graphic design in Darmstadt and subsequently worked for various advertising agencies in Germany, the USA, and Switzerland. After the birth of her children, she decided to take a career break to dedicate herself to her family. During this time, she rediscovered her passion for illustration, inspired by children's books and fairy tales she read with her children.
In 2009, Welz-Stein began creating digital images by collecting historical paintings, photographs, and illustrations, and combining them into surreal and poetic compositions. She employs digital techniques to remove, add, and rearrange elements, blurring the lines between fantasy and reality. Her works are characterized by a dreamy, often fairy-tale style that transports the viewer to another world. Welz-Stein has drawn inspiration from various art movements, including Art Nouveau, Surrealism, and folklore.
