Walter Crane was born on August 15, 1845, in Liverpool and became one of the most influential artists of the British Arts and Crafts Movement. This movement emerged in the mid-19th century as a response to industrialization, focusing on a return to traditional craftsmanship, high-quality materials, and artistic design in everyday life. Crane merged these ideals with his own artistic vision, significantly influencing the design and illustration of his time.

At the age of 13, he began an apprenticeship in engraving and received drawing lessons at Heatherley’s School of Art in London. His artistic career was heavily shaped by his work as an illustrator: he created countless book illustrations, cover designs, and commissioned works, earning him great recognition. He became particularly well-known for his imaginative children's book illustrations that combined artistic design with narrative ease. He also created works in oil and watercolor, always maintaining his decorative style.

Crane was not only an artist but also an engaged reformer. He advocated for the connection between art and life and was convinced that beauty and craftsmanship should be accessible to everyone. His works, often inspired by mythology, fairy tales, and medieval art, reflect these ideals in every detail.

Walter Crane died on March 14, 1915, at the age of 70 in Horsham, West Sussex. His artistic legacy lives on in countless illustrations, designs, and decorative works, making him a central figure in the history of British book art and craftsmanship.
