Virtual Realism

Götz Valien grew up in Kitzbühel, studied at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, and now resides in Berlin. Here, he works as a freelance artist and cinema poster painter. His works often evoke the atmosphere of a film set, with the main characters depicted in perfect poses and radiant beauty, against backgrounds featuring floating text and dreamlike scenery, partly inspired by his native Tyrol. Valien employs the Art Deco style to craft a "virtual realism," merging visions of modern life with the iconography of the 1920s. His central themes revolve around the desires for beauty, exclusivity, wealth, passion, and sensuality.

Since the 1980s, Valien has been active not only in fine arts but also as one of the last professional cinema poster painters—a rare form of traditional advertising art that gains renewed attention through his craftsmanship. His large-format, hand-painted posters adorn the facades of renowned cinemas, making a deliberate statement against the digital flood of images.

In addition to his commissioned art, Valien showcases his works in numerous exhibitions both domestically and internationally. With their perfectly composed visual worlds balancing glamour, nostalgia, and ironic deconstruction, his works invite reflection on modern ideals, role models, and the relationship between reality and staging.
