The Birth of Venus (1445 - 1510)
Alessandro di Mariano Filipepi, called Sandro Botticelli, was born in Florence on March 1, 1445. From about 1465 to 1467, was a pupil of Filippo Lippi, who influenced his painting style. Later he worked in the workshop of Verrochio and was also inspired by the works of the brothers Antonio and Piero del Pollaio. Botticelli came into contact with numerous philosophers and the Medici family, which had a great influence on his career. Among Botticelli's most famous works are "The Spring" painted in 1478 and "The birth of Venus" painted 4 years later, commissioned by Pier Francesco Medici, and the series of "Madonne with Child", generally done in the round. After years of glory, during which he also realized some frescoes inside the Sistine Chapel, his fame slowly faded. He died in Florence in 1510.
Botticelli perfected, with his work, the decorative art of the Renaissance. He was a great portrait painter, but his works covered different pictorial genres and themes including mythological, allegorical and religious. Moreover, he was a great scholar of landscapes and human anatomy and was considered as a reference point by the Pre-Raphaelites, who rediscovered him during the 19th century.
