Dali was born on May 11, 1904, as the son of a notary in Catalonian Figueras (Spain). From an early age, he behaved strangely and tended towards violence against animals, people, and himself. On the other hand, he appeared to be artistically talented, so his parents sent him to Ramon Pitchot, a family friend living in the countryside. After some time, Dali returned to his hometown and attended the art class of Senor Nunez.

In 1921, he went to Madrid, where he began studying at the Academy of San Fernando. In 1925, he was expelled from the academy for rebellion. After returning to Figueras, he was arrested by the Guardia Civil and imprisoned for a month, as it was suspected that he was involved in the rebellious atmosphere in the country. When no evidence could be found, Dali was released and retreated for a solitary stay by the Mediterranean. From here, he returned once more to the academy in Madrid and dedicated himself to Cubism.

In 1927, he traveled to Paris, where he met Pablo Picasso and the circle of Surrealists around Joan Miro and André Breton. Gala, the wife of the poet Paul Eluard, stayed with Dali; he declared her his muse, making her the subject of many of his paintings. In 1934, a break occurred between Dali and the Surrealists around Breton, after which Breton announced Dali's official expulsion from the Surrealist movement. The following years, Dali spent in Italy, where he was influenced by Renaissance and Baroque painting.

Between 1940 and 1948, he spent time with Gala in the USA, before returning to Port Lligat in Spain and converting to Catholicism. In the following years, he turned to a classicist style, which included religious motifs. Thirty years after first meeting Gala, they married in 1958. In 1964, Dali was honored in Spain for his life's work, and in 1973, a Dali Museum was opened in his birthplace, Figueras. He died there on January 23, 1989. Dali's illusory Surrealism operates with excessive detail, which manages to make the dream world appear realistic.

Salvador Dalí understood, like few other artists, how to merge dream and reality in his paintings. With his precise technique, distinctive style, and visionary Surrealism, he created works that made the subconscious visible and shattered the boundaries of imagination. His art inspires not only painting but also continues to influence fashion, film, design, and pop culture—provocative, enigmatic, and timelessly modern.
