The Art of Modernism
Modern artists experimented with colour, form and perspective, gradually moving away from realistic depiction. Key movements include Impressionism, which emphasises light and fleeting moments, Expressionism, which conveys powerful emotions, as well as Cubism and abstract art, which break objects down into geometric shapes or dispense with representational forms altogether. Taken as a whole, modern art stands for innovation, individuality and the courage to explore new paths.
Modern art is often confused with contemporary art. Modernism, however, refers to a concluded epoch, whereas contemporary art describes art of the present and engages with current themes and developments.
