Anna Maria Sibylla Merian ( * 1647 † 1717 )

Portrait of Sibylla Merian

Short biography of Anna Maria Merian

Anna Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) lived in Frankfurt, Nuremberg, Amsterdam and West Friesland. She was a German professor and artist. Merian became famous through the publication of her magnum opus "Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium". This work was a collection of copperplate engravings and descriptions of insects’ life cycles (her scientific work had made her already become famous).

Maria Sibylla Merian was the first researcher who completely devoted herself to entomology, being the first to register the factors that lead to a butterfly’s metamorphosis.

In 1700, the idea of a woman travelling with her daughters to the farthest regions of the world, without any male protection, was scandalous.
