Short biography of Paul Klee (* Dec. 18, 1879 - † June 29, 1940)

Paul Klee Ernst is one of the most important visual artists of classical Modernism of the 20th century. He was born in Switzerland and his parents were two artists: his mother was a singer and his father a musician. His versatile work makes part of Expressionism, Cubism and Surrealism altogether. He also was closely related to the "Blue Rider" artistic group.

Klee traveled in 1914 with August Macke and Louis Moilliet to Tunis, where he met Ferdinand Hodler and this experience marked a turning point in his artistic career. He himself said that as a result of the trip to Tunis took possession of a different use of color and his works appear dominated by warm tones. In 1920, Klee and his friend, painter Wassily Kandinsky, became teachers at Weimar and Dessau Bauhaus. In 1931, he became a professor at the Dusseldorf Art Academy.

After the Nazi takeover, he returned to Bern, where he spent his last years fighting against a long illness.

Klee's artistic activity was incredible and embraced various disciplines as he was involved not only in painting, but also in music and poetry.
