Hilma af Klint was born on October 26, 1862, in Solna, Sweden, as the daughter of a naval officer and grew up in affluent circumstances. After studying painting in Stockholm, she initially dedicated herself to naturalistic art and made a living by selling conventional landscape paintings and portraits.

However, at the age of 44, she made a radical break from conventional art and turned to a completely new visual language. Her works became more abstract, more vibrant in color, and departed from all known styles. As a member of a theosophical society, she began to intensely engage with metaphysical and occult themes. She was convinced that her paintings contained messages from a higher, invisible world, which she aimed to make visible through colors, shapes, and symbols.

Yet her revolutionary ideas met with rejection. Unlike her earlier naturalistic works, she found no audience for her abstract art during her lifetime. Contemporary artists and critics ignored or ridiculed her works. Frustrated by the lack of recognition and misunderstanding of her art, she stipulated that her extensive oeuvre—around 1,000 paintings—should only be made public twenty years after her death. Hilma af Klint died on October 21, 1944, in Djursholm, leaving behind a body of work that was far ahead of its time.

It was not until the 1980s, through the initiative of her nephew Erik af Klint, that her artistic legacy was rediscovered. Art historians and theologians were granted access to her paintings for the first time, which proved groundbreaking for modern art. It didn't take long before museums and galleries around the world began exhibiting her works. Major retrospectives in Sweden, Venice, and New York honored her achievements, and a documentary film reconstructed her life and artistic vision.

Today, Hilma af Klint is regarded as one of the most important artists of modern times. She was a pioneer of abstraction, whose work lay hidden for a long time and only received the recognition it deserved a century after its creation. As early as 1906, the Swedish artist painted the world's first abstract painting—long before Kandinsky or Mondrian. Her paintings, characterized by spirituality, intuition, and groundbreaking form language, captivate art lovers worldwide and have profoundly changed the perception of the development of modern art.
