Painting as a Form of Thought
Marcel Herrador, born in 1971 in Marburg an der Lahn, grew up in various places in Hesse, completed his studies in social sciences in Osnabrück, and eventually found his way to Emden via a circuitous route, where he has been living and working as a freelance artist since 2005.
His paintings are neither depictions of reality nor mere expressions of the artist's emotional life. For him, painting is a continuation of thinking by other means. The content is the sum and result of pictorial thinking about politics and global society, as well as social, economic, and ecological issues. The thoughts and acts of painting are one and the same action: they are considerations formulated pictorially rather than verbally, taking shape only through and with the brushstroke. In this understanding of art, there is no room for the depiction of the seen, and preconceived plans or even sketches become impossible. Pictorial thinking draws from the knowledge and experience of the artist but is the immediate occurrence of the moment, which can overlay but not be retracted.
Herrador primarily uses acrylic painting techniques in his work, which he has self-taught and adapted to his specific requirements. His works have been exhibited in various venues, including the community center in Bomlitz ('Visual Basics', 2008), the Groothuser Church ('Distant Possibilities', 2011), during the Greetsieler Week 2012, at the Green Mill (2014), at the Atlantic Hotel Universum in Bremen ('Universal Thoughts', 2014-15), during the Greetsieler Week 2015 in Greetsiel and the associated pre-exhibition ('Platform' of the Volks- und Raifeisenbank Emden), as well as at the end of 2015 in the Aurich district office 'Shape of Sanity'.
