"The golden age"
Gustav Klimt was born on July 14, 1862, in Baumgarten, near Vienna. In 1876 he joined the painting classes of Professor Julius Viktor Berger in the School of Arts and Crafts. His training ended in 1883 and in the same year he founded the "Künstlercompagnie" (a company of artists) with his brother Ernst Klimt and Franz Matsch. In 1886, at Burgtheater, Gustav Klimt style begins to take a different direction from his brother’s and Matsch’s art and academicism. In 1888 he received the Gold Medal of the Order of Merit and travelled to Krakow, Trieste, Venice and Munich.
Some years after the death of his father and his brother in 1892, Gustav Klimt founded in 1897 with Joseph Maria Olbrich and Josef Hoffmann the "Wiener Secession" (Vienna Secession), of which he was the leader and presented his first exhibition a year later. However, Klimt’s group left the Wiener Secession in 1905. A year later, Klimt created the Austrian Federation of artists, of which he was the president. Then he travelled to Brussels, London and Florence. In 1907 he presented his first erotic drawings. Klimt died on February 6, 1918 in Vienna.
In the early 20th century, Gustav Klimt was already considered an emblematic artist of the Viennese scene. He combined various currents of Jugendstil and made a mixture between figurative and ornamental style with solid colors that gives a sensual and striking effect
