Franz Marc Biography

Franz Marc (February 8, 1880 – March 4, 1916) was a German painter and printmaker, one of the key figures of the German Expressionist movement. He was a founding member of Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), a journal whose name later became a synonyme of the circle of artists collaborating in it.

He studied at the Art Academy of Munich between 1900 and 1903. Then he traveled to France (Paris and Brittany) where he met Macke and Kandinsky, who influenced his artwork. He started to adopt a colorful expressionist style.

In 1914, he moved back to Germany and joined the army. He died in Verdun the 4th of March 1916.
