Founded in 1815 by the banker and merchant Johann Friedrich Städel, the Städel Museum is the oldest and most prestigious museum in Germany. The collection of the Städel provides an almost complete overview of 700 years of European art history, from the early 14th century through the Renaissance, Baroque, Classical art and Modernism.
