Modern Art from the 19th and 20th Centuries in Essen
The Folkwang Museum in Essen houses a collection of paintings, sculptures, and posters. It was founded in 1902 by the wealthy banker's son Karl Ernst Osthaus in the industrial city of Hagen. Today, along with the former Städtisches Kunstmuseum Essen, the collection is installed in a new architectural building by star architect David Chipperfield. Representatives of the German Romanticism of the 19th century include Caspar David Friedrich, Carl Gustav Carus, and Johan Christian Dahl. They are housed under one roof with the 20th-century collection in the museum. Here you can see: paintings of French Classicism and Realism, including works by Eugène Delacroix, Gustave Courbet, and Édouard Manet. Impressionist works by Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Paul Signac, and Camille Pissarro enrich the collection. Bauhaus masters like Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee are also present in the exhibitions, as well as surrealists Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, and Joan Miró. The collection includes approximately 280 sculptures, 600 paintings, 12,000 drawings and graphics, and 60,000 photographs.
