The Royal Court Painter
The Spanish Baroque artist was one of the most important portrait painters of his time. At the court of the royal family, he portrayed numerous members, and through his hand, many historically significant paintings were created. He also influenced other now-famous painters such as Francisco de Goya and Édouard Manet, while Picasso and Salvador Dalí reinterpreted his works.
Velázquez was born on June 6, 1599, in Seville. At the time, the city was one of the largest in Spain and had a rich intellectual and cultural scene, which attracted many painters and workshops that supplied churches and monasteries with paintings. Velázquez began his apprenticeship in one of these workshops at the age of 10. Portrait painting became one of his specialties, including portraits of individuals and groups from everyday life.
He passed away on August 6, 1660, in Madrid.
