Lucas Cranach the Elder was presumably born on October 4, 1472, in Kronach, Upper Franconia. As one of the most important painters and graphic artists of the German Renaissance, he significantly shaped the art of his time with his distinctive style. After initial artistic activities in southern Germany, Cranach was appointed court painter to the electoral Saxon court in Wittenberg in 1505—a significant career move that placed him at the heart of the cultural and political life of the Reformation.
In his workshop, numerous altarpieces, mythological and allegorical scenes, as well as an impressive number of portraits, were created. Cranach became particularly famous for his portrayals of the reformers Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon, highlighting his closeness to the Protestant movement. His paintings are characterized by clear lines, vibrant colors, and a successful fusion of Gothic tradition and Renaissance ideals.
Besides his artistic work, Cranach was also active as an entrepreneur and publisher, ran a printing house, and was even mayor of Wittenberg several times. He was a close friend of Martin Luther and supported his causes not only artistically but also politically. His workshop was one of the most productive and influential in Germany, with a high degree of organization and reproduction of popular image themes.
After his death on October 16, 1553, in Weimar, his artistic legacy was continued by his son Lucas Cranach the Younger, who maintained the workshop and further developed his father's style. The work of Lucas Cranach the Elder is today considered a central part of German art history and an important link between the Middle Ages and modern times.
