“Poppies near Argenteuil” was painted in 1873, during Claude Monet’s particularly productive years in Argenteuil. The work depicts a sunlit summer landscape with vibrant red poppies, through which a woman with a parasol and a child are strolling. Monet’s wife Camille and his son Jean are considered the models for these figures. In the background, the pair appears a second time, lending the composition a gentle sense of depth and harmony.
Rather than rendering each blossom in meticulous detail, Monet used short, loose brushstrokes to capture the fleeting impression of a radiant summer’s day.
