With “Impression, Sunrise,” painted in 1872, Claude Monet created the work that would ultimately lend its name to an entire artistic movement. The painting depicts the harbor of Le Havre in the early morning hours. Through mist, ship masts, and small fishing boats, the orange sun rises above the water and is reflected as a radiant burst of color on the calm surface.
When the work was first exhibited in 1874, art critic Louis Leroy mocked its seemingly sketch-like style and dismissed it as a mere “impression.” From this disparaging remark, the term Impressionism emerged—quite unintentionally. Today, the painting is regarded as one of the most important works in art history.
