Biography of Caspar David Friedrich

Caspar David Friedrich - German Romanticism (1774 – 1840)

Caspar David Friedrich was born on the 5th of September in 1774 in Greifswald (Pomerania). In 1794, he attended the Royal Academy of Art in Copenhagen. In 1798, he moved to Dresden, where he was represented only one year later at the exhibition of the academy. In 1810, he became a member of the Academy of Berlin and in 1816 of the Academy of Dresden.

In the following years, starting in 1820, Tsar Nicholas the First commissioned numerous works, which he realized just before falling seriously ill and being forced to abandon painting in 1835.

Friedrich died on May 7, 1840 in Dresden and after his death fell into oblivion. The interest in his works will arise again at the beginning of the 20th century.

Friedrich is one of the most important German Romantic painters who appreciated the ideals of this artistic period, rich in feelings and realism. He took a strong interest in the representation of natural landscapes, considered as a sort of divine gift, in particular the storms and the moments of dawn and sunset.
