Caspar David Friedrich, born on September 5, 1774, in Greifswald, is regarded as a preeminent co-founder of Early Romanticism, paving the way for art into the modern era. His works, characterized by profound symbolism and a melancholic mood, place humans in relation to the overwhelming nature. Through his unique use of light and dramatic portrayal of landscapes, he created works that transcend mere depiction, addressing existential questions of solitude, spirituality, and transience.
After his education at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, Friedrich moved to Dresden in 1798, where his artistic development was significantly shaped. There, he connected with leading intellectuals and artists of the time, including Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. With works such as Monk by the Sea (1810) and Wanderer above the Sea of Fog (1818), he quickly gained recognition and was honored with memberships in the Berlin and Dresden academies.
Although Friedrich initially enjoyed success, his fortunes changed from the 1820s onward. His increasingly somber works found less favor, and the new, more realistic artistic movement overshadowed his romantic imagery. Additionally, health issues forced him to largely give up painting by 1835. His final years were marked by financial difficulties and artistic isolation.
Caspar David Friedrich passed away on May 7, 1840, in Dresden, largely forgotten. It was not until the early 20th century that his work was rediscovered and recognized as pioneering for modern art. Especially the Surrealists and Expressionists found inspiration in his atmospheric landscapes and symbol-laden compositions.
Today, Friedrich is considered one of the most influential landscape painters in art history. His works are housed in the world's most prestigious museums, captivating viewers with their timeless depth and emotional intensity. His ability to portray nature as a mirror of the soul makes him one of the most outstanding artists of his era.
