Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema was born on January 8, 1836, in Dronrijp, Netherlands. In 1852, he entered the Royal Academy of Antwerp and studied under Egide Charles Gustave Wappers. During his four-year education, he familiarized himself with Dutch and Flemish art. He became a studio assistant to the painter Louis Jan de Taeye.
Alma-Tadema collaborated with the painter Baron Jan August Hendrik Leys. In 1861, his first work appeared, exhibited at the Artistic Congress in Antwerp - "The Education of the Children of Clovis". He drew inspiration from historical photographs of Italian motifs, which were fashionable at the time. During his travels, he purchased hundreds of photographs and organized them into portfolios. The collection was handed over to the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1915 and transferred to the library of the University of Birmingham in 1947.
In 1870, the Franco-Prussian War broke out. Alma-Tadema moved to London. In 1873, he received permanent residency in England and became a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1876. In 1899, Queen Victoria knighted him, bestowing upon him the title "Sir." Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema died on June 28, 1912, at the age of 66 at the Kaiserhof Spa in Wiesbaden.
