Annunciation by Fra Beato Angelico

Gothic period & paintings

This period was established in 1140 - 1150 in Ile-de-France and replaced the Romanesque period. This led to an innovative refinement and elegance of art and painting, which was achieved by adding movement, bright colors and a penchant for naturalism and realism when creating characters. During the 14th and 15th century, the Gothic art movement produced more and more “human” paintings, such as portraits and landscapes, since religious art was shifting between mystical culture and a new humanization of religion.

Gothic was finally replaced by Renaissance by the end of the 15th century.
